Türkiye makes furniture for the region and, increasingly, for Europe and the United States. Behind every table and cabinet there is a finish, and in many workshops that finish is still a nitrocellulose lacquer. This note looks at the wood coatings market, Türkiye's furniture exports and why a binder first used more than a century ago remains a workhorse today.
The Global Picture
Grand View Research values the global wood coatings market at about US$12.4 billion in 2025 and expects it to reach US$18.7 billion by 2033, growing by around 5 percent a year. The same report describes nitrocellulose as one of the most widely used resins in wood coatings, valued for fast drying and low cost. Polyurethane, acrylic and waterborne systems are growing too, especially for surfaces that need high chemical resistance.
Türkiye: A Furniture Exporter
Turkish furniture exports reached about US$4.5 billion in 2024. In the first eleven months of 2025 they reached US$4.2 billion, 1.5 percent more than a year earlier, according to the İstanbul Furniture, Paper and Forest Products Exporters' Association. Iraq was the largest market at US$604 million, followed by Germany, France and the United States. Türkiye ranks among the world's top ten furniture exporters, with clusters in İnegöl, Kayseri, Ankara Siteler and İstanbul.
Why Nitrocellulose Lacquers Still Win
- Speed a nitrocellulose lacquer dries in minutes, so a workshop can sand, recoat and pack the same day.
- Easy sanding and polishing the film rubs out well to a smooth, even sheen, from dead matt to high gloss.
- Repairability each new coat melts into the previous one, so scratches and damage in transit can be repaired invisibly.
- Warmth the slight amber tone brings out the grain of walnut, oak and other woods.
The trade off is lower resistance to heat, solvents and water compared with two component polyurethane. For kitchen worktops and heavy use surfaces, manufacturers choose harder systems; for cabinets, chairs, frames and a large part of export furniture, nitrocellulose sealers and top coats remain the fastest and most economical choice.
What This Means for Buyers
Lacquer makers select nitrocellulose by solubility type and viscosity: ester soluble RS types for most wood lacquers, lower viscosity grades for high solids and spraying, plasticised chips where handling safety matters. Matting agents set the sheen, and pigments colour stains and opaque finishes. Gültaş Kimya supplies nitrocellulose from a leading producer in IPA wetted, ethanol wetted, plasticised and chip forms, together with matting agents and pigments, from stock in our Çayırova, Kocaeli warehouse.
